Office of the State Pathologist’s role
We provide independent expert advice on matters relating to forensic pathology. We also perform the post mortem examinations in cases where foul play is suspected, otherwise known as “State cases”.
We provide a post mortem report to the relevant coroner in State cases and attend at the inquest and at any court proceedings arising out of a Garda investigation.
The State Pathologist is Professor Dr. Marie Cassidy.
She is supported in her work by two Deputy State Pathologists, Dr. Michael Curtis and Dr. Linda Mulligan. Regional support is provided by Dr. Margot Bolster on a part time basis.
The number of post mortem examinations carried out for each of the previous five years are set out in the table beneath:
| Year | Number of Post mortems |
| 2012 | 194 |
| 2013 | 173 |
| 2014 | 173 |
| 2015 | 178 |
| 2016 | 152 |
